If the young lady with the big dream had said she would avoid ever getting a job by MARRYING really rich men, the epithet, “whore”, would not be in play. Depending on your point of view (and probably gender) you’d be picking a different descriptive word or words.
But in either case, the crisis depicted in the final panel would not be present if the young lady didn’t give a fig about what other people thought.
Appearances have different levels of importance for different people. I don’t think there’s any right or wrong in this regard, the situation simply exists. You can move yourself one way of the other along this continuum, and where you sit on the continuum should be your choice, not the choice of others.

does marriage make a gold-digger less of a whore than one who just shacks up? i don’t really care what other people do as log as i don’t have to see them do it, but it’s a good question.
